Leagues like the AHL (American Hockey League) and ECHL (East Coast Hockey League) play a vital role in developing talent for the NHL. Many of today’s NHL stars honed their skills in these leagues before making it to the big stage. What are your favorite memories of minor league hockey? Do you think these leagues receive enough recognition for their contribution to the sport?

I have always admired the role of leagues like the AHL and ECHL in shaping NHL stars. Watching future legends develop their skills is special like seeing Jonathan Quick and Braden Holtby rise through the ranks. One of my favorite memories is catching an AHL playoff game where the intensity rivaled the NHL. I don’t think these leagues get the recognition they deserve for their impact on the sport.

The NHL has two dev leagues, the higher being the AHL and the lesser being the ECHL. The AHL is seen as the second or third best league in the world, depending on how highly the person values the Russian league, but it's still a considerable step down from the NHL. Every other league is a draft year team, such as the CHL major juniors or the NCAA / college system, i.e. teams you play on before moving up to the NHL / AHL / ECHL.

I completely agree—the AHL and ECHL are unsung heroes in hockey. They nurture talent while showcasing raw, high-stakes action. I’ve always felt their playoff games rival NHL ones in passion and grit, proving their immense value to the sport.
