Is the Serve-and-Volley Style Dead in Modern American Tennis?
Once a dominant tactic, the serve-and-volley style has largely disappeared from the modern game, replaced by baseline-heavy strategies. American legends like Pete Sampras mastered this art, but today’s players rarely use it. Do you think the serve-and-volley style can make a comeback in American tennis? Are there any young players capable of reviving this approach, or has the evolution of rackets and surfaces made it obsolete?
Re: Is the Serve-and-Volley Style Dead in Modern American Tennis?
I wouldn't say it's dead because I've seen some tennis players do it, but I would say it's quite obsolete and very old-fashioned.
Re: Is the Serve-and-Volley Style Dead in Modern American Tennis?
The serve-and-volley style struggles in today’s game due to slower courts, advanced racket technology favoring baseline power, and superior passing shots. While a full revival seems unlikely, hybrid approaches could thrive. Players like Taylor Townsend, with aggressive net play, hint at its potential. Adapting this style could add diversity to American tennis strategies.

While serve-and-volley tennis has declined significantly, occasional glimpses remain in American players' tactics. Modern court speeds and baseline-focused training have largely phased out this once-dominant playing style.
